Bookshop

Welcome to Rüütel & Matilda — the Tallinn English Bookshop!

You will find us in the Old Town, right next to Niguliste Kirik (St. Nicholas Church).

The store opened its doors in 2022 and was created by us — two booklovers — Ruta Nõmmela and Madis Mikkor.

The idea was to establish an independent second-hand bookshop with a really good selection of both fiction and non-fiction books, as you would find in Helsinki, Brussels or Berlin. We looked long for a suitable space, and finally found it in the heart of Tallinn's Old Town, on Rüütli street, in a house owned historically by Baltic Germans and used for making carts.

The shop is run as an NGO, with the express aim of encouraging the art of reading,
in the traditional way.

We think that printed books and the art of reading are worth preserving, and that digitalization should not be heralded as a universal recipe for happiness.

The store's main collection includes offerings from contemporary and classical fiction writers like Olga Tokarczuk, Michel Houellebecq, Richard Brautigan, Miranda July, Nancy Huston, Nicole Krauss and David Szalay.

There is also a special shelf set aside for Estonian and Baltic authors translated into English, plus a selection of brand new titles too.

The non-fiction shelves have books by Noam Chomsky, Slavoj Žižek, Byung-Chul Han and others.

Literary magazines like Granta, Analog Sea, No More Amber, Estonian Literary Magazine etc. are available.

The store also sells stationary and gifts, with a broad selection of small-batch manufactured stationery from Tartu-based Print and Paper Studio TYPA.

Situated on Rüütli 4 in Tallinn, Rüütel & Matilda is open Wednesdays to Fridays (12 p.m to 6 p.m.), Saturdays (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sundays (12 p.m. to 4 p.m.).
